2027 PTIN Renewal: Fees, Deadline, and IRS Requirements

2027 PTIN renewal is now open. Review the $18.75 fee, ID.me login requirements, and December 31, 2026, expiration date for current PTINs.

Tax preparers can now renew their Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) for calendar year 2027 through the IRS Tax Professional PTIN System.

Anyone who prepares a federal tax return for compensation must have a valid PTIN. Failure to maintain a valid PTIN may result in penalties. The fee to obtain or renew a PTIN is $18.75.

All 2026 PTINs expire on December 31, 2026. Tax preparers who currently hold a PTIN must renew it for 2027 to continue preparing federal tax returns for compensation in the new year.

A PTIN cannot be shared among multiple individuals or used as a single identification number for an entire office. Each individual tax preparer must obtain their own PTIN.

ID.me Account Required for Online Renewal

The IRS now requires tax preparers to sign in through ID.me to renew their PTIN online. Preparers who do not already have an ID.me account will need to create one and complete the identity verification process before renewing.
