Filing an Extension: October 15, 2026 Deadline
Taxpayers who need more time to file can request an automatic extension until October 15, 2026 by submitting:
Important:
An extension provides additional time to file, not additional time to pay. Any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15, 2026, to avoid penalties and interest.
Other Important April 15 Deadlines
In addition to filing tax returns, April 15, 2026, is also the deadline for:
- Contributing to an IRA for the 2025 tax year
- Contributing to a Health Savings Account (HSA), Archer Medical Savings Account, or Coverdell Education Savings Account for 2025
- Making the first estimated tax payment for 2026 (Form 1040-ES)
- Filing for an automatic extension using Form 4868
- Filing for a business extension using Form 7004
Final Reminder for Tax Professionals and Taxpayers
As the April 15 deadline approaches, it’s critical to ensure all returns are filed accurately and on time. If additional time is needed, file for an extension—but remember that any tax liability must still be paid by the original deadline.
Staying ahead of these deadlines helps avoid penalties, interest, and unnecessary stress during tax season.
