Individual IRS Online Account

The IRS offers each taxpayer a way to access their federal tax information through their individual online account.

The IRS offers each taxpayer a way to access their federal tax information through their individual online account.

Now may be a good time for individuals to look at their IRS online account since they can now view what amounts they received for the first and second economic impact payments (EIPs). The IRS Online Account is where this information may be accessed in case an individual misplaced their Notice 1444 and/or Notice 1444-B which informed them of the amount they received on their first and second EIPs.

Currently, individuals can view the following in their online account:

  • Key information about their most recently filed federal tax return
  • The amount of the first and second EIPs they have received (under the Tax Records tab)
  • Their balance details by year
  • Any amount they owe, updated as of the current calendar day
  • Payment history and any scheduled or pending payments
  • Digital copies of select notices or letters from the IRS (under the Message Center tab)

Taxpayers may also do the following:

  • Make a payment online
  • See payment plan options and request a plan via an Online Payment Agreement
  • Access their tax records via Get Transcript

The IRS will continue to add more features to the individual online account in the future including the ability to digitally sign a power of attorney initiated by their tax professional.

For individuals that have not already set up an account, they will need to do the following:

  • Select View Your Account on the IRS.gov homepage
  • Click the “Create or View Your Account” button
  • Click “Create Account”
  • Pass the “Secure Access” authentication process. The individual must be able to authenticate their identity to access their account. The Secure Access process is how they verify who they are.

Once the initial authentication process is complete, the individual will then be able to use their username and password to access their online account, Get TranscriptGet An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN), and other IRS online services that require the individual to log in.
