Attempted Attack on IRS E-File PIN Application
The IRS recently has identified and halted an automated attack on its Electronic Filing PIN application on IRS.gov. Identity thieves used malware in their attempt to generate E-File PINs for stolen social security numbers.
No personal taxpayer information was compromised or disclosed by the IRS systems. The IRS is taking immediate steps to notify the approximately 464,000 individuals by mail that their personal information was used in an attempt to access the IRS application. The IRS will be marking their accounts to protect them against future tax related identity theft.

Additional IRS, FTC, and Other Federal Resources on Identity Theft
The IRS and the Federal Trade Commission have added additional information to their websites to educate individuals on how to protect themselves from becoming a victim of identity theft. The information includes what to do if an individual becomes a victim of identity theft, how they report identity theft, and how to recover from identity theft.
This past November 2015, the IRS began the Taxes-Security-Together educational campaign which is designed to make taxpayers, tax preparers, and businesses aware of what they can do to help protect themselves from becoming a victim of identity theft. The campaign also aims to educate everyone on security awareness in order to safeguard their personal identifying information and financial data.
